Has there been a list compiled of "points of interest" around Murphy? It would be nice to have as a guide to things, like the best waterfalls, swimming holes, hiking trails, good fishing spots, high peak mountain views, and such. The list could include catagories like dining, shopping, parks & recreation, sight seeing, historic spots, etc. We have been able to find a few things by searching different avenues (on and off the internet), but have not seen a single list compiled in one place. So..... any tips or suggestions as to what YOU would put on such a list as a "must see" destination?
If you're looking for a good, inexpensive lunch, try the snack bar in Parker's Drugs right in the center of downtown Murphy. They may have the best french fries in town.
So, should this be limited to just around Murphy, or say within a half-hour or one-hour drive?
I would think an hour`s drive an acceptable range for a fun outing.
One place we found interesting was the small cemetary located just off the big parking lot at Hanging Dog park. Reading some of the stones dating into the 1800s was amazing! Talk about local history!
We`ve heard about Brasstown Bald, but are`nt sure what exactly it is.... a park maybe?
Any local weekly or monthly auctions?
Brasstown Bald is the highest point in Georgia and is located near Young Harris. I wouldn't call it a park, but it's been quite a while since I visited there, so things may have changed.
As I remember it, Brasstown Bald is basically a great scenic overlook of the mountains and is a great place to watch the sun rise or set. There's a road that takes you to the top of the mountain, so access is easy.
I don't know of any weekly or monthly auctions right around Murphy, but on Friday nights (I think) there is an auction east of Murphy. Just take the four-lane east to Andrews and then the two-lane road through the Nantahala Gorge. When the road becomes a four-lane again, there is an auction barn on the right side of the road. I don't remember the name of the auction and don't have any contact information. A friend of mine used to go there regularly when she was selling glassware at Foster's Flea Market and I used to ride along now and then.
Bob Grove is an auctioneer in Brasstown and you can learn more at Bob Grove Auctions. He is located on the road that goes from Murphy to Hayesville. When you cross the river to go into Clay county, his business is located on the left about a quarter-mile or so past the river.
