Murphy NC 28906 - A growing community with small town charm

This is the first time that Lake Hiwassee has been full in several years, and I'm happy to see it.

I just posted a couple of photos of the lake (opens in new window), taken from near the boat dock in the Hanging Dog Campground about four miles north of Murphy, NC.

Hanging Dog is a National Forest Service campground and has many great camping locations located on four loops. Over the years, I've seen deer, wild turkey, and lots of other animals in the area.

It's a great place to spend a few days surrounded by the beauty of nature.

I've spent many hours there with friends and lots more by myself, sitting under a tree next to the lake and reading or writing while enjoying the cool breeze and the sounds of people swimming and boating. Many other hours were enjoyed while canoeing around the lake.

It's one of my favorite places on this quaint little planet.

Last Friday, I saw that all the trees in my yard were covered with new leaves and thought it would be a good time to get outside for a few hours. As I drove towards Murphy, I enjoyed the thousands of different shades of green on the trees and other plants.

I took a detour down into the Hanging Dog Campground and down to the lake.

Then, I left the campground and went into Murphy and just drove around, reminding myself of the beauty of the area and how much I enjoy living here.

Murphy may not be perfect, and sometimes it can be hard to earn a living here, but sometimes all that pales when I consider all the beauty of nature and the peace and quiet of living in these mountains.

All the best,

JD

I wholeheartedly agree with you! A week or so ago when the leaves suddenly appeared on all the trees - it was magical. I, too, drove around like a tourist looking at all the different shades of green. I was reminded why I love living here. I never had the opportunity to live somewhere that the trees - we have so many of them - put on such a show. Not to mention the wild flowers earlier in the season. My heart swells with joy when I drive these mountain roads - that alone is good enough reason to be here (for me). :-)

Kind and warm regards!

Good afternoon, Kimberly.

I was raised in the southeast, but moved to the Phoenix, Arizona area for a few years. I loved the contrast between here and there and I loved the desert in the springtime when all the wildflowers were in bloom. On the other hand, I was not a fan of that giant oven during the summer.

In late 1984, I moved here to help my Mom and Dad during a period when he was not doing well and was hired to teach computer programming and computer-related courses at Tri-County Community College.

I remember driving east from Phoenix in the summer of 1984. The farther east I drove, the cooler the air and the more water I saw in the rivers.

When I drove through the Ocoee River gorge and saw that fantastic river and all the beautiful trees on the mountains, I wondered why I had stayed in Phoenix so long.

A couple of months later, I moved here and now I can't imagine leaving Murphy, again.

I love the light snows we have in the winter that are beautiful and leave us in a few hours or a couple of days. I love the wildflowers and all the shades of green in the spring and summer. The mountains are covered with glorious colors during the late fall when the leaves change.

I'm still not a fan of the heat of summer, but even though it gets too hot for my personal preference, it's nothing like living in the desert southwest.

I love how you said it, "My heart swells with joy when I drive these mountain roads..."

I could not agree more.

Act on your dream!
