Good morning, Carol.
Brother's Restaurant is located right off the four-lane (Hwy 64) about six miles west of Murphy in the Ranger area. [Brother's Restaurant has moved into Murphy. They are now located in the shopping center across the four-lane from Taco Bell and Ingles, east of downtown Murphy.]
Did you visit the two big flea markets at the intersection of Hwy 64 and US 19? Both flea markets, Decker's and Foster's, are located on the south side of the highway. [I am very sad to report that most of Foster's Flea Market burned during an early morning fire in late July, 2011. It was a terrible loss to the Foster family and many of the merchants who had their businesses there. I don't know if they plan to rebuild. Decker's Flea Market, on the other side of the road, suffered no damage.]
If you are going west on the four-lane, don't turn at this intersection. Go straight ahead for a quarter-mile (or so) and you'll see Brother's Restaurant on the right side of the road in a little shopping center with about a half-dozen other businesses.
My distances are approximate, but probably close. It's a bit tricky finding their driveway the first time, but once you've found it, Brother's Restaurant and the other businesses are easy to get to.
All the best,
JD
PS, It would have probably been easier to say go west on the four-lane until you get to the first traffic light (about six miles) and then go straight for another quarter-mile (or less) and you'll find Brother's Restaurant on the right. [Again, Brother's Restaurant is now just off the four-lane, east of Murphy, in the shopping center across from Ingles.]
PPS. That, of course, assumes that they don't put in another traffic light, but I don't think that's coming soon.

Permalink Reply by John Dilbeck on August 2, 2011 at 11:32am I just want to pop in here for a moment with an observation.
The hikes at Fires Creek are mostly relatively easy. The trail to the top of the falls is a little difficult and would not be suitable for everyone. It's a great walk, if you're able to do it.
The Appalachian Trail has stretches that are easy and some that are very difficult. Much of the trail in Georgia and North Carolina ranges from moderately to very difficult. Most people will find the hike out of the Nantahala Gorge on the Appalachian Trail to be a difficult hike (going either north or south), but if you can do it, the hike is worth the effort.
It's been a long time since I hiked those parts of the trail, but I remember them as being difficult. So was going over Blood Mountain, in Georgia.
Even though it took some effort, I am very happy that I did it. The scenery from the Appalachian Trail is extraordinarily beautiful in many places.
If you've never hiked the AT, and you'd like to, contact Paralee. I think she would be happy to help you prepare. She has written two books about hiking the AT and I recommend them. She has also started a guide service to help you be better prepared for your hike.
You don't want to be wearing the wrong shoes or carrying anything unnecessary when you're spending all day hiking the mountain tops.
I second her recommendation of Appalachian Outfitters of Murphy. Ron and Kathryn are good folks, and they'll help you with what you need. If they don't have it in stock, they'll work with you to get it.

Each of the things you underlined could be an entire discussion. When I get some time, I'll post links to as many of the places as I can find.
Thanks for reminding me of Balsam Mountain Inn. I haven't been there in, well, just about forever! (grin)
