Murphy NC 28906 - A growing community with small town charm

What are your favorite things to do in Murphy and the surrounding area?

Good afternoon.

I'm working on another website that will help to promote Murphy, NC and a select few of our locally-owned businesses. One of the things I'll be adding is information about things to do in Murphy, as well as in the surrounding towns and cities.

I don't promise to add everything that's posted in this thread on the other site, but I'm going to be generous.

If you're the first one to suggest a favorite thing to do and give good details and reasons why, I'll probably post it to the other site, with a link back to your profile page on Murphy Connections, and probably a link back to your specific suggestion in this thread.

Now, please be specific. It won't be enough to say that you enjoy going to museums. Please specify the name of the museum and the town/city in which it is located. Tell us why you enjoy it, how you found it, and so forth. Make it interesting so others would want to follow your lead and visit, too. Tell a story that is interesting and enjoyable, so we'll understand why it's one of your favorite things to do. (It doesn't have to be long.)

The same would be true for camping, fishing, listening to music, bird watching, and so forth. Unless you tell me exactly where you enjoy doing it and why, I probably won't post it to the other site.

Perhaps you have things you really enjoy doing in Chattanooga, Knoxville, Asheville, or Atlanta. We're interested in those, too. After all, we're about "two hours from anywhere."

All things that you post on this thread will, of course, remain here, regardless of what I do on the other site(s).

So, anything you suggest will be valuable to other members of Murphy Connections and to visitors who happen to find their way here to this discussion. Plus, it will give me additional ways to funnel more people to this site from my various other websites and blogs. You'll become famous! (Well, maybe.)

(Of course, the easier you make it for me to report on your suggestion, the more likely I'll be to do it.)

I'm hoping that this will become a valuable resource for all of us.

Thanks for sharing - in advance.

All the best,

JD

[I updated this post on August 2, 2011.]

Good morning, Carol.

Brother's Restaurant is located right off the four-lane (Hwy 64) about six miles west of Murphy in the Ranger area. [Brother's Restaurant has moved into Murphy. They are now located in the shopping center across the four-lane from Taco Bell and Ingles, east of downtown Murphy.]

Did you visit the two big flea markets at the intersection of Hwy 64 and US 19? Both flea markets, Decker's and Foster's, are located on the south side of the highway. [I am very sad to report that most of Foster's Flea Market burned during an early morning fire in late July, 2011. It was a terrible loss to the Foster family and many of the merchants who had their businesses there. I don't know if they plan to rebuild. Decker's Flea Market, on the other side of the road, suffered no damage.]

If you are going west on the four-lane, don't turn at this intersection. Go straight ahead for a quarter-mile (or so) and you'll see Brother's Restaurant on the right side of the road in a little shopping center with about a half-dozen other businesses.

My distances are approximate, but probably close. It's a bit tricky finding their driveway the first time, but once you've found it, Brother's Restaurant and the other businesses are easy to get to.

All the best,

JD

PS, It would have probably been easier to say go west on the four-lane until you get to the first traffic light (about six miles) and then go straight for another quarter-mile (or less) and you'll find Brother's Restaurant on the right. [Again, Brother's Restaurant is now just off the four-lane, east of Murphy, in the shopping center across from Ingles.]

PPS. That, of course, assumes that they don't put in another traffic light, but I don't think that's coming soon.

Go for a hike on one of the many trails within a half hour drive from Murphy. My favorite is the Appalachian Trail and can be easily accessed from Nantahala Gorge and many other areas close by. The Fires Creek area has some nice trails also. Short of gear for the long hike, I reccommend Appalachian Outfitters in Murphy on Tennessee Street.

I just want to pop in here for a moment with an observation.

The hikes at Fires Creek are mostly relatively easy. The trail to the top of the falls is a little difficult and would not be suitable for everyone. It's a great walk, if you're able to do it.

The Appalachian Trail has stretches that are easy and some that are very difficult. Much of the trail in Georgia and North Carolina ranges from moderately to very difficult. Most people will find the hike out of the Nantahala Gorge on the Appalachian Trail to be a difficult hike (going either north or south), but if you can do it, the hike is worth the effort.

It's been a long time since I hiked those parts of the trail, but I remember them as being difficult. So was going over Blood Mountain, in Georgia.

Even though it took some effort, I am very happy that I did it. The scenery from the Appalachian Trail is extraordinarily beautiful in many places.

If you've never hiked the AT, and you'd like to, contact Paralee. I think she would be happy to help you prepare. She has written two books about hiking the AT and I recommend them. She has also started a guide service to help you be better prepared for your hike.

You don't want to be wearing the wrong shoes or carrying anything unnecessary when you're spending all day hiking the mountain tops.

I second her recommendation of Appalachian Outfitters of Murphy. Ron and Kathryn are good folks, and they'll help you with what you need. If they don't have it in stock, they'll work with you to get it.

Well where does one start... We enjoy starting the day with a nice hot "latte"at The Daily Grind, downtown Murphy and while we are there using the wi-fi to get caught up on things. Next a quick walk thru town then around the corner to Moose Hollow Rustic Furniture, they have the neatest stuff on display.  You can hop in the car cruise Joe Brown Hwy thru Hanging Dog following the Hiawassee River and ending up at the Hiawasse Dam. And who doesn't love going to Hogsed in Warne, a sportsman paradise. Our family just came back from Murphy this past weekend, we booked a trip down the Nantahala River thru the NOC.com an excellent white-water trip for any 1st time rafters, then drove east on hwy 64 to mm94 and had dinner at the Balsam Mtn Inn - Monday it's "shrimp and grits".  In Hiawassee check out the Georgia Mtn Fair, or Fairgrounds for you campers they have some great campsites. Went to Asheville for Bele-Chere, it's a weekend arts festival usually at the last weekend in July.  Bele-Chere is one of those things when you do it once, you will always go back year after year. It may be hot walking thru the streets of Asheville but it's worth it. You can eat at 12 bones before leaving. On your way back home to Murphy drive thru Maggie Valley and stop at Granny's Chicken Palace it's the best fried chicken anywhere. The Highlands also an excellent trip, shopping and let's not forget the waterfalls on the way, Dry Falls get out of your car and hike down to the bottom of the falls, it's an easy hike and there's plenty of parking. Take the train in Blue Ridge and when its over walk around the Blue Ridge shopping district thats' right there. Blue Jeans Pizza next to the Feed store, the desserts are huge and to die for, try the carrot cake. I have more lot's more.......

Thanks for sharing, David and Ginny!

Each of the things you underlined could be an entire discussion. When I get some time, I'll post links to as many of the places as I can find.

Thanks for reminding me of Balsam Mountain Inn. I haven't been there in, well, just about forever! (grin)
