Murphy NC 28906 - A growing community with small town charm

John Dilbeck

What are your favorite things to do in Murphy and the surrounding area?

Good afternoon.

I'm working on another website that will help to promote Murphy, NC and a select few of our locally-owned businesses. One of the things I'll be adding is information about things to do in Murphy, as well as in the surrounding towns and cities.

I don't promise to add everything that's posted in this thread on the other site, but I'm going to be generous.

If you're the first one to suggest a favorite thing to do and give good details and reasons why, I'll probably post it to the other site, with a link back to your profile page on Murphy Connections, and probably a link back to your specific suggestion in this thread.

Now, please be specific. It won't be enough to say that you enjoy going to museums. Please specify the name of the museum and the town/city in which it is located. Tell us why you enjoy it, how you found it, and so forth. Make it interesting so others would want to follow your lead and visit, too. Tell a story that is interesting and enjoyable, so we'll understand why it's one of your favorite things to do. (It doesn't have to be long.)

The same would be true for camping, fishing, listening to music, bird watching, and so forth. Unless you tell me exactly where you enjoy doing it and why, I probably won't post it to the other site.

Perhaps you have things you really enjoy doing in Chattanooga, Knoxville, Asheville, or Atlanta. We're interested in those, too. After all, we're about "two hours from anywhere."

All things that you post on this thread will, of course, remain here, regardless of what I do on the other site(s).

So, anything you suggest will be valuable to other members of Murphy Connections and to visitors who happen to find their way here to this discussion. Plus, it will give me additional ways to funnel more people to this site from my various other websites and blogs. You'll become famous! (Well, maybe.)

(Of course, the easier you make it for me to report on your suggestion, the more likely I'll be to do it.)

I'm hoping that this will become a valuable resource for all of us.

Thanks for sharing - in advance.

All the best,

JD

I enjoy going to the flea markets at Ranger and the one on tuesday's. I also love running down at Konehete Park along the paved trails. Shopping downtown Muprhy is great, there are plenty of great thrift and antique shops as well as a top notch bakery. I loved the reubens there!!!!!
My favorite is the Sweet Tooth:)

Good morning, Jennifer.

Thanks for sharing what you enjoy doing in Murphy. I excerpted part of it at Murphy, NC - Things To Do on MurphyGold.com.

I know lots of people who love the flea markets, but I'm not really a fan. I used to sell handmade chain mail jewelry at Fosters Flea Market many years ago. It was more of a hobby than a business.

I once saw ex-President Jimmy Carter at the Tuesday flea market - that's my claim to fame. (grin)

I've been by the bakery many times, but never dropped in. Thanks for the recommendation.

I think just about everyone loves the Sweet Tooth, especially on a hot summer day.

Who else wants to share what they love doing here?

All the best,

JD

Thank you, Jennifer, for the info about the flea markets at Ranger - we will check those out when we come in October. I have a question for you - do you have any family in Indiana? We have long time friends with the name Smoot - just curious! Greg and Sheryl

Hey John,
Hope you had a enjoyable 4th!
Every time I get a chance to come to Murphy, I just love to ride the back roads. As you know I do log home restoration and the wife and I enjoy exploring the beautiful handywork God has created. We also have come across many beautiful log homes, some large and some small but all unique. Hiwassee Lake is always beautiful at sunrise and sunset as well. There is just something about Murphy that kinda tugs at us. I grew up at the other end of the state (Harkers Island) and seeing the sun come up across the ocean is one extreme. Murphy has to be the other!

Good morning, Douglas.

I had a very enjoyable 4th of July. I loved the fireworks in Konehete Park!

Thanks for sharing what you enjoy doing in Murphy. I excerpted part of it at Murphy, NC - Things To Do on MurphyGold.com.

I love driving the backroads, too, and Hiwassee Lake is one of the main reasons I started visiting Murphy many years ago.

All the best,

JD

Having only been to Murphy the one time, we don't have alot of info on things to do there. I have to say our favorite thing is sitting on the deck, it faces the East, of the cabin we stay in and watching the sunrise over the mountains- how gorgeous is that! Every morning we would take our coffee out on the deck and snap picture after picture and each one is unique. We have a friend that prefers the ocean over the mountains because she says the mountains don't move - we beg to differ with her. There is always something different every moment. Our next favorite thing was the John C. Campbell school - we planned our vacation to be there for the festival again this year. What an awesome place - such craftsmanship in all areas. And we met an instructor from our hometown! We agree also with Douglas - there is something about the Murphy area that tugs at our hearts - last year I (Sheryl) cried when we had to leave and I have never done that at the end of a vacation before! God Bless! Greg and Sheryl

Good morning Greg and Sheryl,

I with you on watching the sun rise over the mountains. I don't think I'll ever get tired of that.

The John C. Campbell Folk School is a very special place. I've spent a lot of time there over the years and enjoy every visit. I haven't been able to make any of the Fall Festivals for several years (while I was caring for Mom), but I certainly plan to be there this year and hopefully catch up with some of my old friends there. Who knows? Maybe I'll meet both of you, too.

All the best,

JD

I love to go to the park. The walks, landscaping, openess and wildlife population really thrills me. When I was a young girl; (long long ago! lol) the park was almost my back yard! Back then; it was just a softball field, the rock gym and "the bridge". It was my favorite place in murphy then, as it is now. The other side of the bridge led to the fountain area and lots of fishing. It has changed so much, but it has changed for the better. I can't wait to see the river walk finished, I can almost walk it in my mind. I also like to get up on saturday mornings and walk through Murphy; or any of the surrounding towns, and walk through the shops as if I were a tourist. It can be very interesting to play tourist at home. My brother recently pointed out that unless someone prods you into seeing the local sights, you don't seem to make time to see what is next door! He is right! We are truly blessed in this area because anytime you walk outside there is some wonder to behold!

Good evening, Kathleen,

I was reading in the Cherokee Scout that the lake has receded enough so that the part of the River Walk that has been underwater is now walkable, again. I haven't had a chance to go and walk it, but I plan to go next week.

In a different article, I read where they were asking for more volunteers to help with the River Walk on the west side of town near the L&N Depot. I think it's going to be great when we can walk all the way from the Depot to Konehete Park by the river(s), and vice versa.

Yesterday, I took a day off from the computer and went out and played in the real world. I enjoyed driving around Murphy and stopped to look through a few stores and run some errands. It was a pleasant day. A little too hot for my taste, but still nice.

You brother is absolutely right. We don't take the time to enjoy the local sights and attractions unless we consciously decide to do so.

All the best,

JD

A few months ago, I asked for any stories you would like to share about your favorite things to do in Murphy and the surrounding area.

I mentioned that I was starting a new site, and that site is Murphy Gold.

This evening, I've added a new feature to the Things to Do in Murphy, NC page on Murphy Gold and I'd like to invite you to contribute to the site.

Now, that page is for things specific to Murphy and not the surrounding area. Later, in the next week or so, I'll be adding additional Things To Do pages for western NC, Asheville, Knoxville, Chattanooga, north Georgia, and Atlanta. I'll let you know when they are ready for your stories.

If you choose to contribute, please be sure to use your name and location. If you are a member of Murphy Connections, I'll edit your name to make it a link back to our community here.

If you choose to add a photo - and that would be great! - it must be no larger than 800x600 and either a .jpg or .gif image. If you need to edit the photo to make it fit, you can use your own photo editing software or a website such as Picnik.

I look forward to reading your stories and looking at your photos.

I know there are many things to do in Murphy NC that others would enjoy reading about.

All the best,

JD

With so MANY great resturants and shops in the area to visit,
it may be a little un-fair for us to point out just one in particular.....
but we were VERY impressed to learn how much Brother`s resturant supports the community groups and activities, that it is a MUST for us each time we visit. We`ve also bought gift certificates from there to give out to some of our new friends & neighbors!

I don't think I know of "Brothers". My husband and I were in Murphy this past october looking for a house and I don't think we came across that restaurant. Where exactly is it?
