Murphy NC 28906 - A growing community with small town charm

I'm considering getting a laptop computer next year - for a couple of reasons.

1. I need something to take around with me to demonstrate some of the things I do, and I'm thinking it would be much easier to just enter information from clients right into a computer at the time instead of taking notes and coming back home and entering them into my more powerful computer.

2. It doesn't look like I'm going to get broadband any time soon in this area where I live. At least, with a laptop, I could take it somewhere in Murphy and get a much faster connection than I get here at home.

While I have absolutely no experience using WiFi, I understand the concept.

So, that brings us to the question...

Where are the best WiFi hotspots in Murphy?

I only know of two:

1. Murphy Public Library

2. Cafe Bella Luna (I don't believe Cafe Bella Luna is currently open for business.)

Do you know of others? If so, what are their conditions of use and cost?

All the best,

JD

Hi John,
I have not needed to use WiFi in town, but I have heard that the Welcome Center on 64 offers access, and it is free of charge. If I'm not mistaken, the Daily Grind downtown might also offer connections. Not sure if they charge anything.
Good luck in your hunt.

Good evening, Arleene.

Thanks for adding to the list. I'll try to learn more about these hotspots and compile a list over the next few weeks.

All the best,

JD
Okay - where's ur research list? lol I'm curious now that I have a laptop :)
Good afternoon, Dena.

For right now, this discussion is my research list. As I learn more, I'll post here. When there is enough to make it worthwhile, I'll create a page divided into paid hotspots and free wifi and post it on Murphy Gold.

If you learn of any public wifi hotspots in Murphy, please tell us about them here.

All the best,

JD
Hi John,
If you're out our way....64W near Tn border, Freddy's Lounge offers free WiFi and I think you can get it in Piggly Wiggly parking lot/by the bank, in Ducktown. See ya, Pete
Good morning, Pete.

Thanks for the info. I don't know where Freddy's Lounge is located.

All the best,

JD
Good morning to you too,
Freddy's lounge is on 64 West, just over border in Tn. on south side of road. Just about across from the Copper Basin Golf Course, it's the local "watering hole"....LOL. Since we've moved here been trying to get DSL as we're in AT&T phone territory. It's available 100' away but they're on a different switching station. We have 30 homes in our developement, but they keep giving us the run around, so dial up is our only reasonable choice...ugh!
Well have a Super Day, Pete
Good morning, Pete.

Thanks. I don't get over to that area very often.

I know all about dial-up. I live several miles from where the nearest broadband access is available and it doesn't look like I'll get a fast connection any time soon. It's one of the few negatives I can think of related to living in a rural area.

Do you know what the policy is on using the WiFi hotspot at Freddy's Lounge? Is it free to customers or is there a charge?

Although it's out of the Murphy, NC area that I try to cover, it's still something that some of our residents in the western part of Cherokee County may want to know about.

I appreciate your help on this.

All the best,

JD
Hi John,
Freddy's has a sign out by 64 saying Free Wi Fi, so don't believe there's any fees, but I'm sure they'd like you to buy a burger, wings, drink? They have a large attached pavilion with picnic tables also, if you choose to be outdoors. Would think it should work from a vehicle in their parking lot? The no DSL is a bummer. Phone is busy, plus can't download large files, emails, webcams, etc. The AT&T line crews tell me no big deal to connect us up, but you contact the office..."not available in your area"! Maybe someone reading this has an idea? Thanks, John
An update on free wifi in Murphy, NC.

I just learned that Hometown Diner has free wifi for customers. Just ask your waitress for a password.

I eat there several times per month and just realized Friday night that they have free wifi. How observant am I?

JD
Good evening,

I just remembered that ShoeBooties Cafe offers free wi-fi. I've never used it with my laptop, but I have posted updates on my iPod Touch while dining there.

I've been told that Wendy's and MacDonald's also have free wi-fi, but can't verify that from personal experience.

All the best,

JD
Stucco House Coffee Shop has free wi-fi for customers.
