Does anyone plant by the signs? Or know someone who does?

Good afternoon, Tipper.

Mom and Pop were both very good with plants of all kinds.

Mom didn't think the signs were important, but Pop always planted by them unless time constraints prevented it.

When i was a young teenager, I remember them going over seed and plant catalogs all winter, just thinking and planning the next year's garden. Of course, now and then, they would disagree on what they wanted to do, but they were pretty much in sync most of the time.

However, when it came to planting, they would often disagree. Since Pop and I did most of the initial garden prep and Pop did the majority of the planting, he usually ended up planting by the signs and he almost always had a bountiful garden.

One day, I told him that it was just a bunch of nonsense, so he challenged me, "Okay, smarty pants, if you think that's true, let's see."

So, he planted part of the garden by the signs and I either ignored them and planted whenever I wanted or did the opposite of what was supposed to be done.

I'm not a gardener. I come from a long line of people with green thumbs, but I have the rare ability in my family to take a healthy living plant and care for it until it turns into a brown stick. That may have been part of the problem with our experiment.

Still, even though both of us, and Mom and my brother, worked the garden that year, the parts he planted did significantly better then the parts I planted. He had a good tater crop and I had nice leafy plants and scrawny potatoes. He had a very good squash crop and I didn't. My corn grew about the same as his. Every other thing we grew that year did better if he planted it.

I don't understand it and it goes against all my scientific education, but from then on, when it came time to plant a garden, fruit trees, or berry plants, our family usually planted by the signs.

It didn't hurt, and it may have helped.

All the best,

JD
Thanks for the reply. My Dad never planted by the signs-he said it wasn't that he didn't believe in them-it was just he had to plant the garden when he could-in between work, coaching baseball, church, and singing. I tried a sign test kinda like you mentioned on my site last summer. But we got too late a start-cause of me. I'm planning another one next summer. I did do my own test between my fall garden and Pap's. I have pretty white turnips-he just has leafy greens. So it does seem like the sign planting worked for me. Who knows-but it is interesting.

Hope you have a good day.

Tipper
