How to write a romance story? 6 Replies

Good afternoon. A few days ago, on Facebook, I was challenged by my cousin Jacque to write a novel. It seems that she likes the way I describe things now and then. Then Dena and my brother joined i…

Hi Michael.

So, that's why they call it fiction! (grin)

It's called "creative writing" John.... hehehe... pattern him after you... if you WERE a studly young local. LOL!

Good morning, Michael.

I like that: "a perilous event in the life of a studly young local."

But...

If I pattern him after myself (other than being clueless), I'm not sure anyone will finish even the first chapter!

(grin)

If it's a romance book for women, gotta' get their attention right away. So start with a perilous event in the life of a studly young local.... you know... pattern him after yourself and just run with it.

Good morning, Michael.

Lately, I've had bigger fish to fry and not much time for writing, but that should be changing in the next week or so.

I'm still thinking about how I want to get started with this story. If it were science fiction, I'd jump right into the middle of the crisis in the first chapter, tell the back story in the next few, and then pick up where I left off in the crisis until the resolution. At least, that's what I think I would do.

I'm not even sure where to start with a romance story, but I'm thinking about it. I don't know if the same approach would work or not.

I'm still interested in using as a working title, "The man with no clue," but I want it to have at least a couple of meanings. First, he knows nothing about women and romance. Truly clueless. Second, he's either going to be a detective, private eye, or reporter who is tracking something that will involve the protagonist and he's run into a dead-end and has no clue how to proceed.

So, I'm thinking that maybe the protagonist will be a successful attorney who will be related to the case in some fashion. After her children were grown and left home she's on her own. The love of her life and father of her children was killed in a tragic accident and she has buried herself in her work ever since.

At least, those are the lines along which I've been thinking.

No mushy stuff yet, but I'm looking forward to giving it a try.

Whatcha think?

How's the book coming John?
Did you get to any of the mushy stuff yet?

Good afternoon, Michael.

That's a great idea about dusting off a project and discussing it.

I think everyone is trying to get over the holidays and back to a normal schedule. Maybe we'll see more interactions next week.

I have a novel I've always wanted to finish, but it's going to have to wait awhile as I work on other projects right now.

All the best,

JD

Anyone out there have an unfinished project (or finished) laying in a drawer somewhere?
Pull it out, blow the dust off it and let's talk about it. Why haven't you finished it? Do you need help? Just too busy?
If it's your dream to see your own thoughts in print -- let's discuss getting you there.

Good morning, Michael.

I know you must be disappointed, but I'm sure they'll get to it when they can.

That's one of the problems with print publicity - will they have room to publish it?

At least with online marketing, we can run something quickly and don't have to edit for space. With as much as I type, that's a very good thing! (grin)

I'm not trying to compete with the Cherokee Scout, just adding additional ways for us to get our messages across.

I'll keep looking. I'm sure they'll run it soon.

All the best,

JD

Afraid so, John.
Scott Stambaugh tells me that it will run when they have "room" for it.
However, I exchanged notes with David Brown (editor) yesterday on another issue and he commented that it was slated to run in next week's paper.
All I can do is hope nothing bumps it, I guess. Thanks for looking!
