I for one cannot wait to get to Murphy in september to look around for a home. My husband and I are retiring in Murphy and even though we have never been there we have done research and find it to be absolutely gorgeous. Right now we live on the coast of NC but decided the mountains are for us. So far in my search of Murphy I have met alot of very nice people and want so much to meet them in person. We want a chalet in the mountains and have several picked out to see. Our dream is getting closer. If anyone can give me first hand info on Murphy and it's surroundings would be greatly appreciated. ......................................... carol chapman
I cannot say enough about Murphy. Cyndie and I retired here in 2006. The people here are just great! Very different from living in a big city where we're very cautious about whom we talk to or even make eye contact with. One must adjust to the the slower place. We lived in Palm Harbor, FL and we were soooo glad to get away from the traffic and heat. You will find that the local custom is to wave at folks while driving in your car and folks will wave back. Very much different from city life. You will be about 2 hours from Atlanta, Chattanooga and Asheville. Our choice is Asheville when we want to go to a "big" city. Although Cleveland, Tenn is "only" 65 miles from here. and is a fair size city. Walmart is open 24/7. Lowe's is here. What more does one need? lol Also, get used to folks chatting about this and that to the bank teller and clerks at the stores. All this while you are standing in line, waiting. We don't honk our horns at folks and you WILL notice the absence of horn honking. Summers can get hot but it does cool down after the sun sets. We live along the Hiwassee River between Murphy and Hayesville and just love it! No city noise and the water rushing along is quite peaceful. Please come and visit and sit a spell. If you like flea markets we have the big one out off the 4-lane on 129 and the local Tuesday one in town by BB&T bank. John Campbell Folk School, in Brasstown, has a lot of classes you can take. Be sure to get on their mailing list for a catalogue. That is, if you're interested in taking up banjo or stained glass or wood turning as those are the sorts of stuff that are available at the school. Please put the annual New Years Eve possum drop festival on your calendar. It's held at Clay's Corner in Brasstown. I'd suggest you subscribe to the local newspaper (sorry it's only once-a-week) Cherokee Scout. They always have a list of events. The paper is also available online at http://www.thecherokeescout.com/news/ Btw, I am a Realtor and I personally have a brand new chalet for sale in the mountains. ANY offer will be considered, as I am close to losing the place because of the current home market conditions. And, if you don't already have a Realtor you are working with I will be glad to assist you. Welcome to Murphy and the general area.
Hi Ron..........thanks so much for the info. We are very excited about getting down there. Our problem is we have property here and in Gatlinburg, Tn that we are trying to sell. We cannot move until something sales because we no longer want any mortgages. So, now we are just waiting. Things around here are now starting to move but moving slowly. Our house in Gatlinburg is getting some interest so who knows. What a changing economy this one has been. But we are coming out of it so who knows. Chalet is what we want. I've looked at so many on the net and I just love them. Can't wait to get to the "simple living." I personally want to get away from the gangs and crime here. I know every town has crime but some more than others. Here it's the gangs and the drug lords. The police are trying to handle it but I don't think they know how to do it. I had suggested that the city recruit Philly cops or some from Newark, NJ. Anyway, Murphy here we come........... carol
