Murphy NC 28906 - A growing community with small town charm

On her blog, Museum 2.0, Nina Simon recently wrote How to Develop a (Small-Scale) Social Media Plan.

I think this is excellent advice for organizations and small businesses, not just museums.

As you already know, you can't be all things to all people, and most small businesses and non-profits are staffed by people who are already overworked.

Still, when appropriately used, social media and social networking can extend your reach and provide better communications with the people you serve without adding unnecessarily to your work load.

While her post does not go into all the specifics, she does break the process into three parts. This was developed for museology students working with various museums, but I think it can apply to other organizations as well - perhaps yours.

Part 1: Define your goals.
Part 2: Define your resources and boundaries.
Part 3: Develop the ideas and explain the plan.

Each of these three parts has additional information and it is followed by examples of what the students and museums are doing or considering.

This is an article well worth reading by anyone new to social networking and how you can use it effectively for your organization.

All the best,

JD
