I love thunderstorms! Most people don't. You may dislike them or be afraid of them. If either of those is true for you, then you won't like this short video. There is no script, no actors, no drama,…Continue

A Step Above Stables, located between Murphy and Blairsville, offers trail rides, but I don't know any of the details.
What kind of community involvement are you interested in? I'm a member of Heritage Partners. They sponsor the fall festival on Labor Day weekend and created and manage the River Walk project.
Comment by John Dilbeck on April 11, 2011 at 10:59am Back in the '70s, everywhere I went, I carried my canoe on top of my pickup. I don't know how many times I've canoed the rivers all around the southeast and lots of the lakes, too. I sold my canoe before I moved to Arizona, which was before I moved here in 1984.
I don't know why, but in all the years since moving here, I've never once rafted the Ocoee or Nantahala, and I used to drive up here from Atlanta just to canoe them. The Nantahala River is one of my favorite places on this planet.
I've talked to friends and family several times about rafting the Nantahala, but never did it.
This is something I have to remedy this summer.
I ain't gettin' no younger, you know. (grin)

Comment by John Dilbeck on April 10, 2011 at 5:00pm I know about the parks, rivers and attraction sites in and around Murphy, but would like to read more.
What comes to mind immediately is the walking and hiking environment just a few steps outside my cabin on the hill, at the end of Ranger Rd. Through nicely paved country roads, one walks into a vista of old barns and houses, flat meadows featuring little brooks, and great vegetation. The walks are calming and invigorating, particularly when done with good walking buddies.
I also look forward to the auctions on weekends. I know of one in a town farther west on 64, held on Fridays; and a big one farther east 64 as one enters Hayesville, on Saturdays. Rare and interesting finds, as well as things used everyday, can be had for a pittance, if one is lucky. I especially enjoy the friendliness of the audience, who seem to all know each other, and like watching Southern ways in action. I love the jokes, jargon, and exaggerated Southern drawl of the auctioneer (particularly in Hayesville), which makes the evening very entertaining.
