Murphy NC 28906 - A growing community with small town charm

Valley River Railroad Club 16

The General, one of two locomotives involved in the Civil War raid that came to be known as the Great Locomotive Chase or Andrews' Raid, visited Murphy, NC in 1961, almost 100 years after the chase.

The Texas is the other locomotive that tried to catch the General.

The General is now located in the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History in Kennesaw, Georgia. That's where the raid started, in Big Shanty, now known as Kennesaw.

The raid ended a few miles south of Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The Texas is on display in the Atlanta Cyclorama.
