Tell us something about yourself...
I love to write and share the stories of hikers along the Appalachian Trail. I'm just a dreamer who wanted to share my story, my laughter and pain, along with life on the Appalachian Trail and now offer my book Still Living a Dream at www.outdoorhikerbooks.com for seekers of outdoor adventure books.
I had the pleasure of growing up in the country and was exposed to the great outdoors at a very young age.
I am sixty-five years old and still go out backpacking every year. I have many hikers that have inspired me so much I hope I can also be a small inspiration to others who have a dream to be followed.

Wilderness Adventures-The Learning Center

As most of you know Wilderness Adventures was founded in the hopes of reaching as many children in the Tri-State area and preparing them for all levels of outdoor activities in the great outdoors. Paralee in association with The Learning Center had the pleasure of working with a group of 11 to 13 year olds for the first semester of this school year. Paralee has ten years of experience long-distance backpacking and has written two books that share valuable resources to assist in the…

The Gift of Friendship

“True friendship consists not in the multitude of friends, but in their worth and value.” by Ben Jonson

We all like to be the life of the party and we like to feel wanted, and the more people who seem to like us, the better.

Still, we recognize who our true friends are-and we don’t have so many of these. They are the friends who don’t wait to ask what they can do when we need help. They’re the friends who tell us the things we don’t want to hear, but need to hear anyway. They’re…

Afraid, Lonely or just Unhappy

Posted on November 14, 2011 at 11:33am 1 Comment

Ever feel grumpy or unhappy? Get up from your chair and take a quick walk in nature. Look for signs of nature's beauty as you walk. It will cheer you right up. A sunny day, a light breeze, a temperature perfect for sitting outside without a jacket-such days make us feel happy, at peace with the world, grateful.

Walking in the rain, making snow angels, or watching the wind whip the trees also can make us feel happy. Nature keeps us grounded in what's real. Winter will balance summer,…

I haven't been there in about 50 years. I was a kid when Pop took me. I remember it as one of the most beautiful river walks I've ever been on.    I'm going to have to get back over there one of these days.    I…

I am enjoying exploring a new area. We want to hike Jacks River this summer since you have to cross the river 42 times if you do the entire trail. Have you hiked that area John

I remember hiking along the Jacks river with Pop, when I was a young boy.    When he was young, he had walked all over the area and knew it well. Every time he went to Benton to visit his Mom, brother, and other relatives, he'd talk…

Thanks, my wife and I would love to be able to spend more time there however we still live and work in Miami and our kids 27 & 21 still in college and both still home. Anyway we try to get to the house in Murphy 60 days a year. My wife and I are not ones to stay home we like to get out and check the places out, 1 day trips are very cool. I haven't been able to find a whole lot of hiking trails and not to familiar with all the local waterfalls in and around Murphy, we are still working on that. I have a close friend who use to work for me in Miami, now retired in Asheville, we go there alot and he finds the nice hikes and waterfalls along the Blue Ridge. My wife and I enjoy the outdoors, she needs the easier hikes - she's a Florida flatliner. I can hike anything, we are planning another trip to Murphy on or around July 22nd. Not sure if the whole family is coming with us or maybe just my cousin and his wife,  lets stay in touch and maybe we could get together with your group for a local hike..

Paralee, my youngest son is 27.  He is looking to relocate so I don't know if we would be able to do the AT next year.  Wea really need to find out where it starts in PA. because we are only 20 minutes from the PA. line. I am so glad that your grandchildren love the outdoors. See you sometime after the 25th.  Amy

I really enjoyed meeting you in person today! It's not often that I can talk hiking on the Appalachian Trail and websites and marketing all with the same person!

Hope I didn't talk your ears off! (grin)

There is a much larger group of local folks on Facebook, but the information scrolls out of sight so quickly there. I'm working to build a place here where the information will be retained and easy to find.

If there's anything I can do to help you get more from Murphy Connections, just let me know and I'll do my best to help.

Good afternoon, Paralee. Welcome to Murphy Connections.

I used to love hiking and wanted to hike the AT. I hiked the lower 250+/- miles of it, but never got to the rest.

It's a pleasure to meet you.

JD
