Edwin Manchester died in his home this week and he will be missed by the people who knew him.
When he managed the local seed orchard for the US Forest Service, my mom worked for him for several years. She always liked and respected him.
I met him when he volunteered to manage the
Murphy River Walk project. Starting with nothing, he supervised and coordinated with Heritage

It's hard to believe that it's already time for the kids to go back to school. Where did summer go?
Even though it's still hot during the days, the nights are cooling off and there is a definite feel of fall in the air. Some of the leaves are already showing some color and that's happening sooner than normal.
I think most of us have been on a go, go, go treadmill for the last few months. I have been, and so have many of the people I know. Maybe we

I've been going through a major health crisis for the last few months and almost didn't make it.
Now, however, following several surgeries, I'm starting to feel better. I have six months of chemotherapy ahead of me and hope to be feeling much better within the next year.
I'm still a long way from being recovered, however. I am weak and get tired very easily, but I am making very good progress.
Since I expect to still be

I receive the bulletins from the DOJ, FBI, etc. I have just received one that might be of interest to some of you and if not, perhaps someone you know that might be gullible or naive enough to be taken in by this scam.

Yesterday, I enjoyed a leisurely breakfast and conversation with
Ron Langer at Hometown Diner in Murphy, NC.
It's the first time I've felt like doing much of anything since my surgery last month and I enjoyed it.
Hometown Diner has an excellent breakfast buffet and I've enjoyed it every time I've eaten there.
Now that warm weather is here, I've started wonderin

I wanted to share a little bit about the excitement I am having at the moment. We own a small farm here in South Africa, which we are selling to move to NC. One of the farmers uses one of our camps to graze his oxen and in exchange we get fresh farm milk 3 times a week. We pasteurize the milk ourselves and before we did so this weekend, we decided to separate the cream from the milk, which is not a lot as you can imagine. We did this on a couple of bottles and stored it in the refrigerator, then…

Yesterday, even though I was not feeling very good, I spent some time sitting on the porch of Castle Dragon and enjoyed being alive and away from the noise and congestion of the cities where I spent a lot of my younger years.
I love living in the country. I enjoy waking up to the sounds of birds singing and Fred (my grandson's rooster) crowing to welcome the new day. It's much better than the sounds of traffic, blowing horns, car alarms, and sirens!

The local circus was in town for a couple of days last week. While we didn't actually go into the circus this year, we did get to enjoy the outside activities that came with it. My son rode a pony for the first time, and got to see a camel up close. It's always a fun time and you can get tickets for the kids to get in free. It was a nice day which made it that much more enjoyable. If you haven't been, I encourage you to go to the "big top" next year!

It looks like I'm going to be fairly scarce online for the next two or three weeks, or maybe longer. I hope you'll enjoy continuing to play in this sandbox while I'm away.
I was diagnosed with colon cancer today and I'll go in for surgery next week. Hopefully, I'll be back home a week or so after the surgery.
Between now and then, there are a lot of things I have to do offline, so if you don't see me for awhile, don't worry about me.
I'm sure Dena will post something…

The first time I came to Cullowhee, prior to going to college, I fell in love with the small town of Sylva, Franklin, Bryson City, and Murphy. The more I explored the area, the more I liked it. I hope to eventually move and stay in one of these towns that I love so much.
I live in Hickory now, which years ago was so much smaller, and now is riddled with traffic. Hickory was the place I stopped travelling. I had been a travel nurse for 11 years, and that ended when I accepted

I joined a site a called
GoodReads.com and for any of you who like books... or have friends who do... I recommend checking it out.
Similar to facebook, you simply "register" and then you can do whatever you want... as much or as little as you feel. You can set up a profile and begin to fill your "shelves" with books you've "read"... "want to read"... "are reading" etc. etc. You can make "friends" with other members and even…

A Manner of Speaking
I know you've all been around people like this. Loud talkers.
What's with these insecure morons who require all the attention? You know the kind. Whether you're in a private setting or a group activity... regardless of who's talking or how many... this idiot, usually female... will talk over anyone within earshot. Yes, talk OVER…

Without fail, every person to finish
JUICE: Revolution (so far) has stopped me and asked how long for the sequel.
I guess that's a good sign. Frankly, I've been a little shocked by the responses I've been getting.... make that, pleasantly surprised.

A hug is form of physical intimacy - the closing of the arms around another person. The hug is probably the most common human sign of love and affection. A hug is a simple action that conveys different messages for different people and circumstances but generally a hug expresses positive feelings.
A hug is truly wonderful because it is both physical and psychological as it generates emotions and can even trigger memories. A hug is primarily a form of non-verbal communication. It brings people t…
