Murphy NC 28906 - A growing community with small town charm

I will be scarce around here for awhile

It looks like I'm going to be fairly scarce online for the next two or three weeks, or maybe longer. I hope you'll enjoy continuing to play in this sandbox while I'm away.

I was diagnosed with colon cancer today and I'll go in for surgery next week. Hopefully, I'll be back home a week or so after the surgery.

Between now and then, there are a lot of things I have to do offline, so if you don't see me for awhile, don't worry about me.

I'm sure Dena will post something about how I'm doing before I'll be able to.

My surgeon is very skilled with lots of experience and I'm happy to put myself into his hands.

I don't plan to post many details, but I'm looking forward to telling you that I'm better -- hopefully -- in the near future.

I appreciate all of you who have inquired about my health and have extended wishes for my recovery. Thank you!

Everyone has been supportive and that has made a difficult time much easier. You know who you are.

There are a couple of bright spots. 1. I feel better right now than I have in a long time (oddly enough). 2. The cancer is located high enough that it looks like I won't have to get a colostomy.

The bad news is that it has had time to grow and possibly spread. A colonoscopy a couple of years ago may have found it before there were any symptoms and treatment would have been easier. Unfortunately, with no health insurance, I was not able to afford the preventive screening.

This is not how I planned to spend the next few weeks, but we have to do what we have to do.

If you contact me and I don't respond, be assured that I appreciate your thoughts and kind wishes. I'll try to get back to you eventually.

Again, thank you for all the support. I appreciate it more than you'll ever know.

BTW, if you happen to have any influence with anyone at Apple, I wouldn't mind getting my hands on an iPad to help me pass the time while I'm in the hospital, even though I'll be there before its official introduction. (grin)

All the best,

JD

Our thoughts & prayers will be with you John! I myself had a re-section to remove a malignant tumor from the intestine several years ago.
(In my case, it was actually 2 surgeries a week apart, so my hospital stay was a little longer.)
The recovery time lounging around at home was the worst, very boring! Wife says I drove her crazy!
So be sure to have plenty of hobbies available to distract you, and keep you busy!
We`ll be thinking of you, hurry back!

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers, Jim and Debbie.

Jim, it sounds like you made it through okay and I'm looking forward to doing the same.

I'm planning on buying some books before the surgery and I'm not sure what I'll be doing during the recovery period back home, but I'll bet there's something I can find. (grin)

If nothing else, a close friend gave me a couple of Sudoku puzzle books and that'll keep me busy for awhile, especially the hard ones.

All the best,

JD

Thanks, Pat! I'm planning on beating this and being around for awhile. I'll be back online as soon as I can.

This is the last time I'll be dropping into Murphy Connections for a week or two. If you have any problems with the site, please be patient until I get back online.

I'm looking forward to playing in this sandbox again, soon.
