Comment by Catherine "Cat" Rightsell on November 25, 2011 at 12:14pm I know... it was truly amazing... and it floated long enough I could be truly sure... it was just like our American Eagle.... I've seen hawks, buzzards, and falcons... this was an Eagle. Such a blessing to see.
Comment by John Dilbeck on November 25, 2011 at 11:39am I used to take a notebook with me to the lake. I'd sit propped up against a tree near the shoreline and would write. Sometimes I'd sketch, but mostly, I'd write about whatever tickled my big ol' brain. (grin)
I'm looking forward to doing that many more times.
As many times as I've been there, however, I don't think I've ever seen an eagle. Lots of hawks, though.
Comment by Catherine "Cat" Rightsell on November 25, 2011 at 10:22am I have a set of pictures I took from there. I made a panorama from them of that early Spring morning... my son was fishing and I was just taking in the beauty. I saw an Eagle fly from the top of the trees across the lake. It was an ominous, spiritual feeling, as I thought about the Cherokee who had lived there, for so long... hundreds of years before the Corp of Engineers ever dug out the lake... it was a memorable day.
Comment by John Dilbeck on November 25, 2011 at 12:13am Hanging Dog Campground is the main reason I live here, now. In the early 1970s, I lived in Atlanta and used to come up here every chance I got, to go camping, hiking, and canoeing. I camped at this campground many times.
When Pop retired, I brought him up here and that's when he found their house and bought it.
He was raised in Benton, TN and wanted to be close, but didn't want to live in Polk County, so he and Mom decided that Murphy was close to both their families, but not TOO close.
Long story, but it's fun thinking back on what got me interested in Murphy in the first place.
It's a great place for boating, too.
Comment by Catherine "Cat" Rightsell on November 24, 2011 at 7:41pm One of my FAVORITE places on the planet. I believe it's abt 3 miles from downtown Murphy into the park.. then 1 mile from the park entrance to the campground info board and host trailer. Great under-used mountain biking trails. Fun place for sun and swimming in summer... fishing... and of course camping... tent areas and RV spots.
